Impressionism and buying Impressionist art

Impressionism and buying Impressionist art are Internet words these days. Of course, Impressionism as an art form began when the camera was invented. Art and technology have always gone together. First the artist decorated the church, then the castle, working for the pope or the king. Technology was the impetus for the Renaissance, technology and trade. Trading with the East brought the color blue to Europe at the time of the Renaissance. Coincidentally, the curved mirror and the invention of the lens may have led to projection and the birth of portraiture in the Renaissance.
The invention of of the camera in the 19th century meant that artists lost their jobs in portraiture. The Impressionist movement is a natural consequence of the artist and his employment. If the photographer is doing the portraits then we paint a pretty picture for the walls of the rich. This is a layman's assessment of the birth of Impressionism. The history is more complex. Modern artists study the Impressionist, post impressionist, and the beginning of what we call modern art. The Impressionist were the first to ask, "what is art". Before that, it seems, art was about painting reality as it was, and telling an allegorical story. When visiting the Louvre, art seemed to be about decorating the church. To say art was about decoration diminishes our supposition of it's importance. Actually, the decoration of our homes, is art. It is our art and it does not diminish art to say that it is decorative. Its value is indeed centered around being decorative. In a sense, the arts is good as the house in which it resides. Great art resides in the richest of homes, and always has..
Great art sometimes resides, though, in the garage, and the closet, because the passing of time determines what we save and what we throw away. When we buy an unknown artist and we preserve the work, we are curators and we are helping to make the decision.
It's the Internet, and there's always a good discussion somehow leading to a link, in this case, Impressionist art, from modern unknown artists.
